Dong Ba Scripts
|
The Dongba script is a pictographic writing system used by the priests of the Naxi people. The Naxi language belongs to the Sino-Tibetan family. The script is perhaps a thousand years old. It consists of about 1,400 symbols, 90% of which being pictographs. It is largely a mnemonic system and different authors may use the same glyphs with different meanings. Note that Dongba means "wise man". The additional syllabic Geba script may be used for clarification.
After the 1949 Communist Revolution in China, the use of Dongba was discouraged. Today it is nearly extinct, and the Chinese government is trying to revive it in an attempt to preserve Naxi culture. This pack of 54 cards is related to this revival. Many pictographs are shown with their Chinese and English translation.
