Heroes of Ancient Israel

Arthur Szyk (1894-1951) was a graphic artist. Born in Poland from a Jewish family, he became famous for his war caricatures and book illustrations. In the 1930s he painted in watercolour and gouache on paper twelve figures featuring heroes from the Bible and ancient history. He probably intended to design a pack of cards but it is only today that this pack is going to be produced by Historicana. One thousand deluxe sets with two packs of 52 cards, one single headed and another one double-headed will be printed in June 2011. The book “Heroes of Ancient Israel: The Playing Card Art of Arthur Szyk” by Allison Claire Chang and a suite of 12 numbered and embossed prints will be added to each set with a custom hand-made cloth and a leather box.
