Origin of French Suit Signs

Jack of clubs, early 17th century. This card was one of a small number found in 1902 when a staircase in Trinity College, Cambridge, was repaired. They are the earliest surviving English playing-cards known to have been played with. Following a French edict of 1613 it shows the maker's name, Nicolas Beniere, and his trademark, a swan.
